COMING UP NEXT with Martinez – 2/4/15

COMING UP NEXT!

A look at what our resident opinionated blogger type, Martinez (Pie-Cast) has to say about this week’s upcoming releases.

This Week’s Picks of the Pulls:

STK662822

Cluster #1 by Ed Brisson and Damian Couceiro

Woo! Another new sci-fi book! Bring it on!

In all seriousness, this book sounds awesome. In the future, when humans have begun colonizing the solar system, a lot of manpower is needed to protect newly conquered worlds. Soldiers are off fighting wars so what do the powers-that-be decide to do? Hire criminals and prisoners to make up for the dwindling quantity of available personnel. What could go wrong?

Detective Comics #39 by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato

I’ve featured Manapul and Buccellato’s bat book on Coming up Next before, and I stand behind what I’ve said in the past. I’m mentioning this book again for two reasons. One, this Anarky story has been really really good. Two, I hear folks complaining about Scott Snyder’s book and how tired they are of the huge story arcs. Well, if you aren’t happy with Batman, do what I did and jump to Detective Comics!

Star Wars #2 by Jason Aaron and John Cassaday

So the first one wasn’t so bad. I’m sure it wasn’t what every superfan was hoping for but it was a start. Without going into any spoilers, it seems like this book won’t be afraid to get into some possibly continuity altering… confrontations. I’m wondering how much input the “Lucasfilm story group” has on the plot development.

Superman #38 by Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr.

I’m stepping out of my pull list with this pick. I’m not reading Superman, though I feel like I should because I am a fan of Romita Jr. In this issue, the solicits tell us Superman will be getting a new power and suit. Ok, I’ll bite. I’m curious about what this will mean. The preview pages make it seem as though Superman’s power will allow him to go “super saiyan” in a matter of speaking. My guess is he’ll be absorbing the power of the sun. Again, I haven’t been reading the series so I don’t really know what’s going on. Only one way to find out!
