COMING UP NEXT with Martinez – 10/1/14

A look at what our resident opinionated blogger type, Martinez (Pie-Cast) has to say about this week’s upcoming releases.

This Week’s Picks of the Pulls:

BBWS2014001-Rudy-NFC-1a548BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1 by Ales Kot & Marco Rudy

Hey, look, a Winter Soldier book! Actually this isn’t very surprising considering he was the namesake of the latest Captain America movie. They’ve got to squeeze him in there somewhere. Bucky was also involved with the events of Original Sin. Without spoiling anything, what happens to Bucky in the last Marvel event leads up to this book. So, that being said, I would recommend you read it so you’re not lost.

I’m not sure what to expect from this book. I’m a huge Bucky fan, but this book is going to put him out of his element. I also don’t know too much about the creators, but I’m willing to give it a shot.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #25 by Rick Remender and Carlos Pacheco

The Marvel train keeps right on rolling this week with a big Cap issue. This is part of the trinity of changes Marvel announced some months ago. By now, this cover isn’t really very effective since we all know that Sam Wilson will be picking up the Shield. I’m not going to pass any judgement until I read. That’s final. Read it first, then we’ll talk.

SOUTHERN BASTARDS VOL. 1 by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour

The Jason’s really hit it out of the park with this book. Those of us that have been following this monthly know, Southern Bastards is a great read. If you want some hometown ass kicking and southern grit,
this is the book you want to read. Perfect with all those who are tired of tights, capes and ridiculous monthly gimmicks. $9.99!

THOR #1 by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman

Honestly, this is probably the Marvel change I’m most excited for. This might seem like something that could be very gimick-y. OH LET’S JUST MAKE THOR A CHICK! But, no.

I think this new Thor could be the beginning of a much bigger change. We could actually begin to see Marvel introduce important new characters while still maintaining their biggest properties. Think about it like introducing a new James Bond. This might be the answer to keeping characters alive and relevant without ret-conning their origins or killing them off and then bringing them back. We get a new origin, a new character, and hopefully new stories. Plus, we finally get a female character taking on a MAJOR role in the Marvel Universe.

Nothing against Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Black Widow, etc, but they were never really A-List. THOR, one of the most iconic Marvel characters, is now a woman. I for one, think that’s pretty darn cool.

THE REST OF MY PULL LIST 10/1: Adventure Time #32, Black Widow #11, Detective Comics #35, The Fade Out #2

I’m sure those of you out there who read this weekly post realized that I very infrequently talk about DC releases. Well that’s because, A) I’m a Marvel zombie and B) I honestly can’t get into any current DC titles (‘cept Batman). However, I am open for change. If any of you think there is a current DC book or any other book that I consistently miss every month. Please, let me know! I’ll read it and talk about it! Email in at ( with the subject line: “Coming Up Next Recommendations” Also feel free to let me know your thoughts in person at the shop!

Thanks for reading!
