COMING UP NEXT! A look at what our two resident opinionated blogger types, Ivy (Women Write About Comics) and Martinez (DE Pie-Cast) have to say about this week’s upcoming releases! This week we’ve got something special for you. Lord Duffington himself tells what you should be reading. Without further ado:
Ivy’s Picks of the Pull:
This is the final issue of the immensely fun Winter Soldier mini series that started up around the Captain America movie release. Bitter March has been a real throwback to the old, weird days of espionage books, and most of the book is something like a capsule episode that takes place entirely on a train. I’d definitely suggest tracking down the first four issues or the trade when it comes out.
Grayson #1 by Tim Seeley & Mikel Janin
Yeah, that’s right: I’m picking a DC book. A controversial DC book. But Dick Grayson/Nightwing has been one of my favorite characters since my early teen years, and as long as he still has the best butt of the DCU, I’ll be reading his books. DEAL. (Plus, it’s being written by Revival‘s Tim Seeley!)
The Rest of Ivy’s Pull For 7/9/2014: Adventure Time: Banana Guard Academy #1, All New X-Men #29, Bee & Puppycat #1 (2nd Printing), Captain Marvel #5, Lumberjanes #4, Original Sins #3, Spread #1
Martinez’s Picks of the Pull:
I’m trying something different this week by recommending a DC book. As most can tell, I am a Marvel zombie. However, sometimes a DC book will come around that will capture my attention. Most of the time, like in this instance, it’s a Batman book. I jumped on Detective after the new creative team took over. Manapul’s art is inciting. Combine that with Buccellato’s covers, and it becomes hard to look away. This team is laying down a great Batman story. It’s got crime, drugs, and all the “grimy-ness” that goes with them.
Kaboom puts out, what seems to be, an endless stream of Adventure Time mini-series alongside the main title. More often than not, these tend to be more entertaining than the ongoing. This one features everyone’s favorite everyman: Root Beer Guy! I’m excited for this book because the Banana Guards are some of the funniest dudes in the show. Also this book is co-written by one of the writers for the show (Kent Osborne). This is a trend I’d like to see continue. Anytime a writer from the show gets to write a comic, the results are usually pretty awesome.
The Rest of Martinez’s Pull for 7/9/14: The United States of Murder Inc #3, Winter Soldier: The Bitter March #5
Bonus!!! – DUFFY PICKS!!!
If you aren’t liking the new direction of Wolverine and the X-Men, this book will fill that void in your mutant soul.
Bendis is weaving one heck of a mob story here, and we’re only three issues in!!!
