COMING UP NEXT with Ivy & Martinez: 4/23/14

COMING UP NEXT, a look at what our two resident opinionated blogger types, Ivy (Women Write About Comics) and Martinez (DE Pie-Cast) have to say about this week’s upcoming releases! Without further ado:

Ivy’s Picks of the Pull:

Midas_Flesh_005_coverAMidas Flesh #5 by Ryan North & Shelli Paroline

Midas Flesh is consistently one of the most enjoyable books on my pull. While superficially a sci-fi adventure about a ragtag group of space explorers (think Firefly, kind of) featuring a talking dinosaur and a giant slug, this book is actually incredibly well crafted, emotionally captivating, and incredibly intelligent. Fans of Adventure Time will already be familiar with Ryan North’s hilarious writing, but this book can appeal to more than just the Cartoon Network crowd.

ddDaredevil (ANMN) #2 by Mark Waid & Chris Samnee

The Waid/Samnee Daredevil has been a near-universal favorite amongst Marvel readers. If you’re looking for a solid book that keeps being good time after time, this is your pick. The All New Marvel Now! relaunch/renumbering isn’t so much a new start as a jumping on point — Matt’s moved to San Francisco, and GUESS WHAT, he’s already in trouble (shock!). If you’ve been in the shop and heard one of us singing the praises of Daredevil, but were intimidated by 5 trades worth of material, consider picking it up here (and then go back and read the rest, of course).

The Rest of Ivy’s Pull for 4/23: Bunker #3, Dead Boy Detectives #5, Guardians of The Galaxy #14, Iron Patriot #2, Original Sin #0

Martinez’s Picks of the Pull:

Lazarus08-Cover-d786fLazarus #8 by Greg Rucka & Michael Lark

It seems like it’s been a while since issue # 7. It’s not just me right? Anyway, here were are at the 8th issue and it feels like the pace is picking up for this title. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been enjoying it since day one. However, the book feels to have only recently reached it’s sweet spot. For those of you who haven’t yet read Rucka and Lark’s dystopian future hero saga: PICK THIS UP! The creative team has created a future that feels scary in that it feels very real. The first trade is a cheap one so grab that and switch over the singles if you can. The letters at the back of the book are worth it!

3768602-7thsword_01-pr-page-001The 7th Sword #1 by John Raffo and Nelson Blake II

I don’t know what it is about ‘out-of-the-blue’ titles, but they always grab my attention. Maybe it’s the refreshing feeling you get when you read something completely different. This book wasn’t even on my radar until last week when Comic Vine posted a preview of the first few pages. Look it up if you can, because I was hooked. The previews say the book will be ‘Akira Kurosawa meets Sci-fi’ and the pages I read reminded me of “Dune”. While the team is relatively unknown, I saw we try our luck with Darby Pop’s new book

The Rest of Martinez’s Pull for 4/23: All-New Invaders #4, The Bunker #3, Conan the Avenger #1, Massive #22, Midas Flesh #5, Original Sin #0, Tomb Raider #3
